Soaked carpet, pad, drywall or insulation that cannot be cleaned comes out.
Leaving it behind means the smell stays.

Clean and dry
Floors, framing and hard surfaces that stay get cleaned.
Air movers and dehumidifiers dry anything still damp.

Deodorize and seal
Once the source is gone, we deodorize the space.
Cleaned framing and subfloor get sealed, so what is left behind stays sealed in.

Why do air fresheners not work?
They cover a smell. They do not remove what makes it.
The source is still in the drywall, carpet, subfloor or ductwork.
Once it is removed or cleaned, the smell has nothing left to come from.
Can the smell go without tearing anything out?
Sometimes. If the source is on a surface, cleaning and deodorizing can be enough.
If it soaked into drywall, pad or subfloor, that material usually has to come out.
